We Harvest What We Plant

As I travel from East Tennessee to West Tennessee, I’m reminded that summer is slowly beginning to give way to fall. The landscape is changing. Fields are maturing, colors are beginning their transition, and the beauty around us tells the story of another season.

It reminds me of a simple truth about life and leadership: we harvest what we plant.

The harvest we see today didn’t begin today. Seeds were planted months ago. Someone prepared the ground, planted with expectation, tended what was growing, and trusted the process—even when there was nothing visible above the soil.

Leadership works the same way.

Every word of encouragement is a seed. Every person we develop is a seed. Every expectation we reinforce, relationship we invest in, and act of kindness we offer is planting something that may produce a harvest long after we’ve forgotten the moment.

“A man reaps what he sows.” — Galatians 6:7 (NIV)

Reflection:

The changing seasons remind us that results take time. We can’t plant today and expect a harvest tomorrow. There are seasons for planting, seasons for cultivating, and seasons for harvesting. Great leaders remain faithful through all three. Sometimes the beautiful harvest we’re experiencing today is the result of seeds planted long ago—and sometimes today’s work is preparing a harvest we may not personally get to see.

Today’s Challenge:

As you move through your day, ask yourself: What am I planting? In my team? My family? My relationships? My faith? Plant encouragement. Plant accountability. Plant kindness. Plant excellence. Plant hope.

Then have the patience and faith to keep tending the field.

Seasons will change. The landscape will change. But eventually, we will harvest what we consistently choose to plant.
